LST Curriculum Alignments and Crosswalks

Welcome! This resource page connects national and state-specific educational standards with the evidence-based content of the Botvin LifeSkills Training (LST) program.

These crosswalks are designed to help educators and administrators quickly identify how implementing LST not only delivers vital substance abuse, violence, and social-emotional learning, but also simultaneously fulfills key academic requirements in areas like Health and Physical Education.

Use the links below for crosswalks to national as well as your state’s standards and see how LST is a powerful tool for both student wellness and academic achievement.

Universal Learning Standards

Many school districts have requested that the Botvin LifeSkills Training program be aligned to their state standards.  The LST Universal Learning Standards Alignment matches the program’s objectives to a universal standard that helps sites align the program to specific state educational standards.

National Health Education Standards (NHES)

The NHES standards provide a written framework for what students should know and be able to do to promote personal, family, and community health as articulated by performance indicators that serve as a blueprint for organizing student assessment. This alignment helps providers match the objectives of the LST curriculum with NHES. Watch CDC’s video for more on these standards.

Why align the LST Program with National Health Education Standards?

  • Assists in identifying ways to incorporate the LST program into existing curriculum requirements
  • Increases fidelity-based implementation of the program, which increases effectiveness in outcomes to reduce and prevent health risk behavior in elementary and middle school students
  • Encourages faculty and administrative adoption and support for inclusion of prevention education in the overall curriculum rather than viewing it as an add-on or supplemental curriculum that has to be fit into existing requirements

CASEL Social-Emotional Learning

LST provides foundational skills for successful youth development through its alignment with CASEL’s five core SEL competencies. Its cognitive behavioral approach uses a variety of teaching techniques to facilitate discussion, which provides key knowledge, coaching, and behavior skill practice. LST should be considered an approach that can be used effectively in both schools and youth-serving organizations to support the social and emotional development of youth.

Common Core Standards

The Common Core State Standards Initiative is a state-led effort that established a single set of clear educational standards for K-12. The standards are designed to ensure that students graduating from high school are prepared for college programs or the workforce.

The LST Common Core Standards Alignment matches the program’s objectives to the Common Core’s Anchor Standards of English Language Arts.

Aligns to all four ELA Anchor Standards (reading, writing, language, and listening and speaking)
Easily identifies which skill is addressed by level, book, and page number
Helps teachers to devise lesson plans and tailor instruction to the individual needs of the students in their classrooms
